Top Easter Hymns For Resurrection Sunday

Easter music

I am often at a loss for words when it comes to articulating my thoughts- let alone singing – about our Savior. And, while it is true that women typically speak more words than men on a daily basis, the meditations of our hearts in song format is really a balm to my soul. The classics writer, Hans Christian Andersen is credited with saying, “Where words fail, music speaks.” Expression comes naturally for some as they create works to help direct our praise, and others- much like me- are appreciative for their giftings. And, what better day than Easter to lift our voices in one accord? When I think of Easter hymns for church, these are some of my favorite or top Easter hymns for Resurrection Sunday for your reflection and consideration.

Classic hymns for Easter could include:

The Old Rugged Cross

Christ the Lord is Risen Today

Crown Him With Many Crowns

All Hail The Power of Jesus’ Name

There is Power in the Blood

When I Survey the Wondrous Cross

There is a Fountain Filled With Blood

Amazing Grace

Jesus Paid it All

I Stand Amazed in the Presence

Contemporary Christian Music to accompany traditional Easter hymns could also include:

Easter Song

Forgiven

Closer Than You Know

Shout Hosanna

Blown Away

My Redeemer Lives

Lion and the Lamb

Sunday is Coming

Yet Not I but Through Christ in Me

God So Loved

Are there any Easter hymns from your childhood or beyond that come to the forefront of your memories? My mom would play the Easter Song and I remember thinking how her fingers seemed to dance joyfully across the keys while my siblings and I crowded around the piano bench to sing along with her. One of my all time favorite worship songs is entitled So Will I (100 Billion x) and these lyrics minister to me every single time I sing them, often with tears streaming down my face in gratitude. This is the amazing story of Easter- the foundation of our faith- and example how to live our days on this side of Heaven for His glory:

God of salvation

You chased down my heart

Through all of my failure and pride

On a hill You created

The light of the world

Abandoned in darkness to die

And as You speak

A hundred billion failures disappear

Where You lost Your life so I could find it here

If You left the grave behind You so will I

I can see Your heart in everything You’ve done

Every part designed in a work of art called love

If You gladly chose surrender so will I

I can see Your heart

Eight billion different ways

Every precious one

A child You died to save

If You gave Your life to love them so will I

What if we had a playlist during Lent in anticipation of Easter Sunday? It isn’t any different from what we experience during Advent and the Christmas season as we are overwhelmed with Christmas carols on the radio, in shopping centers and grocery markets, television, etc. While it may be done in a commercialized manner, how wonderful that so many are singing the words reflecting upon our Savior’s birth in Silent Night and Joy to the World! Can you imagine if an Easter hymns list was played during this Holy Season just as frequently as Christmas carols? And, hear my heart when I ask, isn’t it curious why it’s not? Feel free to take this list to build upon or change altogether and then share it on your website, mobile church app, group message, and/or social media to proclaim His perfect gift for eternal transformation!
